Training on ROUVY with heart rate and no power meter

ROUVY runs perfectly well without a power meter, and on this platform that is the normal setup rather than the compromised one. A supported smart trainer reports its own watts. A classic trainer needs a speed sensor and gives you no automatic resistance [ROUVY Classic Trainers]. What you give up is precision in the load ledger, and a heart-rate number that governs a long endurance ride will not govern a set of short hard efforts. Here is what changes, and what to do about it.

What ROUVY does when there is no power meter

ROUVY looks for a power meter first: its own support article says the app primarily searches for the POWER METER and it doesn't care about the trainer [ROUVY Virtual Power]. Without one, a supported smart trainer supplies the watts. Without either, a classic or turbo trainer plus a speed sensor produces virtual power from the trainer's published curve.

That priority sentence is easy to misread. It does not mean ROUVY ignores your trainer. It means the trainer is a resistance device first and a data source second. With a meter paired, every number on screen comes from it. With no meter, a supported smart trainer becomes the data source, and its watts count as power for every metric ROUVY computes. So the phrase no power meter covers three riders, and only the third is really training without power.

The third rider is on a classic or turbo trainer. Those cannot be connected by themselves and must be paired with a Bluetooth or ANT+ speed sensor or power meter, and ROUVY states the consequence plainly: classic trainers cannot be connected as Controllable, which means you will not automatically get resistance based on terrain [ROUVY Classic Trainers]. Pairing asks for a resistance level and a wheel size, and from your speed ROUVY calculates virtual power against that model's published curve [ROUVY Virtual Power]. The gradient on screen becomes something you answer with your gears.

Heart rate sits alongside all of this rather than inside it. The chest strap connects under HEART RATE, and ROUVY is explicit that it is optional for the ride [ROUVY Classic Trainers]. It is displayed, recorded and exported, and it is not what a structured session is written against: ROUVY workouts carry power targets derived from your FTP, which the app defines as the highest average power you can hold for roughly an hour [ROUVY Vocabulary].

What the ledger loses when there is no power

ROUVY says it on its own vocabulary page: the most accurate Training Load comes from power data, and without power it estimates load from energy expenditure, which is helpful but less precise [ROUVY Vocabulary]. That estimate is computed for every activity over five minutes and then feeds your long-term Training Score.

The compounding is the part worth understanding. Training Load answers how demanding one ride was, combining intensity and duration, and Training Score is built from the Training Load of your recent rides [ROUVY Vocabulary]. An estimate slightly wrong on one ride is harmless. The same estimate applied to every ride for twelve weeks moves the curve you would read to decide whether to take a rest week. TSS is stricter again, because ROUVY computes it from Normalized Power, Intensity Factor and duration [ROUVY Vocabulary].

Which rider this hits is narrower than the headline suggests. If a smart trainer is reporting watts, ROUVY has power data and you are on the power ledger; owning no meter costs you accuracy in the watts, not the method. Only the classic-trainer rider on virtual power sits outside it, and even there the figure is a curve lookup from speed rather than a guess [ROUVY Virtual Power]. Treat it as repeatable rather than accurate: it tracks your progress on that trainer and compares with nobody else's.

None of this is a reason to avoid ROUVY without a meter, and it is not a flaw in the platform. It is the trade every heart-rate-anchored system makes, stated openly rather than buried. Read the load chart as your own trend line, not as a measurement.

Why heart rate governs the long ride and not the short one

Two properties, both measured. Heart rate drifts upward during prolonged work, so a fixed heart-rate target represents a rising relative metabolic intensity as the ride goes on, an effect measured under heat stress [Wingo et al. 2012]. And it compresses hard efforts: across 63 cyclists, three interval formats spanning 22 percentage points of power moved peak heart rate by five [Seiler & Sylta 2017].

Cardiovascular drift is the progressive rise in heart rate and fall in stroke volume that begins after roughly ten minutes of prolonged moderate-intensity exercise, and it is associated with a reduced maximal oxygen uptake, particularly under heat stress. The consequence for prescription is direct: the higher heart rate reflects a higher relative metabolic intensity rather than a higher workload [Wingo et al. 2012]. Hold a fixed number for two hours and you are quietly riding easier and easier to defend it. Indoors the effect arrives sooner, which is its own subject and not this one.

The interval problem is the mirror image. Seiler and Sylta had 63 well-trained cyclists ride 4 x 16, 4 x 8 and 4 x 4 minutes at maximal session effort. Power came out at 95, 106 and 117 percent of 40-minute time-trial power and blood lactate at 4.7, 9.2 and 12.7 mmol per litre, while peak heart rate in the work bouts moved only from 89 to 94 percent of peak [Seiler & Sylta 2017]. Heart rate answers a demand already made, so it separated three very different sessions by five points. Shorter reps make that worse rather than better: a 30 to 60-second effort is over while the response is still climbing.

The zones themselves carry a rider-sized error bar. In 36 trained male cyclists and triathletes, 85 percent of maximum heart rate matched the group mean individual anaerobic threshold almost exactly, and yet per athlete it landed anywhere between 87 and 116 percent of that threshold; 70 percent of maximum spanned 53 to 85 percent of it [Meyer et al. 1999]. A published heart-rate zone is right on average and personal in its error. That is workable for steady riding and not workable for deciding whether a hard rep hit its target.

How to train on ROUVY with a strap and no meter

Three rules. Anchor endurance rides to heart rate and let it drift. Judge hard sessions on completion and perceived effort, which is a valid intensity instrument in its own right [Scherr et al. 2013]. And let the trainer's own watts stand in for a power meter wherever the trainer reports them.

For endurance work, set the heart-rate zone as a ceiling for the first hour and then stop defending it. If the number climbs five to ten beats over a long ride while cadence, gearing and breathing are unchanged, that is drift doing what it does [Wingo et al. 2012], not evidence you went too hard. Chase the ceiling on a three-hour ROUVY route and you finish softer than you started.

For hard sessions, change the pass mark. The question is not whether heart rate reached a number. It is whether you completed every rep at the prescribed target, and how the session felt. Borg's scale is a defensible instrument for that: across 2,560 people it correlated with heart rate at r = 0.74 and with blood lactate at r = 0.83, with the lactate threshold sitting near RPE 11 and the individual anaerobic threshold near RPE 14 [Scherr et al. 2013]. Logged next to the session, that rating carries more information than the average heart rate did.

You still need an FTP number, because every ROUVY workout target is derived from one, and which ROUVY FTP test to take is a question of its own. A trainer-reported figure anchors it perfectly well. On a classic trainer, the virtual-power number is what your workouts are written against, so set FTP from a real effort on that trainer rather than importing a figure [ROUVY Virtual Power].

Everything above sits on one side of the split that runs through training with ROUVY as a whole: ROUVY is a strong execution layer, and the decision about what this week should contain still has to come from somewhere. Can you use ROUVY without a power meter?

Yes, and it is the common setup. ROUVY looks for a power meter first and does not care how resistance is produced [ROUVY Virtual Power], so a supported smart trainer simply supplies the watts instead. With neither, a classic or turbo trainer paired to a speed sensor gives virtual power calculated from that trainer's published power curve.

Does ROUVY control resistance on a classic trainer?

No. ROUVY states that classic trainers cannot be connected as Controllable, which means you will not automatically get resistance based on terrain [ROUVY Classic Trainers]. You set a resistance level and a wheel size when you pair, then answer the gradient with your gears. The route still plays and the ride still records.

Is ROUVY's Training Load accurate without power?

Less accurate, and ROUVY says so: the most accurate Training Load comes from power data, and without power it is estimated from energy expenditure, which is helpful but less precise [ROUVY Vocabulary]. TSS is stricter again, since it needs Normalized Power and Intensity Factor. If a smart trainer reports watts, you are already on the power path.

Can I do ROUVY structured workouts on heart rate?

You can ride them, but do not judge them by heart rate. In 63 cyclists, three interval formats differing by 22 percentage points of power separated by only five points of peak heart rate [Seiler & Sylta 2017]. Judge each rep on completion and perceived effort instead [Scherr et al. 2013], and keep heart rate as a record.

Why does my heart rate keep rising at the same effort?

Cardiovascular drift. Heart rate climbs and stroke volume falls from about ten minutes into prolonged moderate work, so the same wattage reads as a higher relative intensity later in the ride, most sharply when the room is warm [Wingo et al. 2012]. Treat the zone as a ceiling for the first hour and stop chasing it after that.
