Wahoo makes great hardware. Getting a plan onto it is the hard part.
If you own an ELEMNT, you already know the shape of this problem. The computer will happily run a structured workout — it just needs somewhere to get one from. Wahoo names eleven services that can supply one, and Strava isn’t one of them. The app nearly every ELEMNT owner already has connected brings routes, segments and finished rides in. It has never sent a workout back out.
So a rider who just wants their week on their handlebars ends up shopping for a second subscription, and most of what’s on offer is a calendar. It holds the block somebody wrote in advance. Miss Wednesday to a sick kid and Wednesday is still sitting there — nothing behind it reshapes, and you spend Sunday night dragging sessions around by hand.
AdaptCycling connects to Wahoo the same way the others do: straight to your Wahoo account, no Strava in the chain. What’s different is the plan arriving through it — one that rebuilds itself when a week falls apart.
Connect once. The week shows up.
01 / 04
Connect Wahoo
One authorization from your Wahoo account. No Strava in the loop, no file exports, no third app in the middle. Your ride history starts syncing immediately.
02 / 04
Every ride gets read
Not the summary averages — the whole recorded file, second by second. Power, heart rate, and the shape of every effort, going back through the last six months already sitting in your Wahoo account.
03 / 04
A plan gets built around it
Your FTP is estimated from your own power curve, so there's no test to ride first. Periodization, weekly volume, and interval structure are solved from your history and your goal.
04 / 04
The week lands on your head unit
The next seven days go to your Wahoo account as structured workouts. Start a ride and the session is already there, with target ranges to sit inside — not a number you have to remember.
What syncs in, and what gets sent back.
Most apps that “support Wahoo” only read from it. The return trip — putting a session back on the device — is the half that saves you a subscription.
| Data | What it does |
|---|---|
| Ride files | Full second-by-second recording, every ride |
| Power & heart rate | Used to estimate FTP and track load |
| Time zone | Read from the head unit itself |
| Structured workouts | Next 7 days, intervals and all |
| Target ranges | % FTP, or bpm for heart-rate riders |
| Plan changes | A revised week replaces the old one |
Rest days aren’t sent. An empty day on the head unit is the whole point of one.
Works with the Wahoo you already own.
Outside
ELEMNT BOLT, ELEMNT ROAM, and ELEMNT ACE pick up the week over Wi-Fi and show the session when you start the ride — including the current BOLT 3 and ROAM 3. Targets arrive as ranges, so you have somewhere to sit rather than a single number to chase.
Inside
Set your riding preference to indoor and the same session goes over marked for the trainer, then runs from the Wahoo app — the usual way a KICKR, KICKR CORE, or KICKR BIKE picks up a workout. It’s one setting, and you can flip it back any time.
The ELEMNT RIVAL watch is the exception — Wahoo takes its planned workouts from TrainingPeaks only, so our push can’t reach it.
Already on Wahoo’s own training app? The honest comparison is on AdaptCycling vs Wahoo SYSTM — SYSTM’s 4DP profiling and video library are genuinely good; the difference is the hour-long test wall and what happens when you miss a week. If TrainingPeaks is what you’re paying for today, the side-by-side is here.
Quick answers.
Can I get structured workouts on my ELEMNT without TrainingPeaks?
Yes — and TrainingPeaks was never the only door. Wahoo's app-partner list names eleven services that can send a plan to an ELEMNT, TrainerRoad, Intervals.icu, JOIN and Xert among them. AdaptCycling connects the same way, so your week appears on the head unit without a TrainingPeaks subscription. What you're really choosing between isn't the pipe — they all use the same one — but what's writing the plan at the other end of it.
Which Wahoo devices does this work with?
The ELEMNT computers — BOLT, ROAM, and ACE, including the current BOLT 3 and ROAM 3. Sessions also show in the Wahoo app itself, which is where they run if you ride a KICKR indoors. The ELEMNT RIVAL watch is the one exception: Wahoo takes its planned workouts from TrainingPeaks only, so our push can't reach it.
Do I need Strava at all?
No. Wahoo can be your only connection — it's also how you sign in, so there's no Strava step to get through first. We read your rides from Wahoo, analyze them, build the plan, and send the workouts back. Strava can't do that last part for anyone: in Wahoo's partner list it carries routes, segments and finished rides, and no planned workouts in the other direction.
I can't find AdaptCycling in the Wahoo app. Where do I connect it?
Here, not there — and this trips up almost everyone. Wahoo has two kinds of partner: older ones you switch on inside the Wahoo app under Authorized Apps, and newer ones you connect by signing into your Wahoo account from the partner's own site. We're the second kind, so searching the Wahoo app for us comes up empty. Start from our sign-in page and the Wahoo authorization screen opens from there. Afterwards we appear in your Wahoo profile, with a button to revoke us whenever you like.
How far ahead does my plan appear on the device?
Seven days — today plus the next six. That ceiling is Wahoo's, not ours: no service can queue more than a week on a head unit. Worth knowing that not every service fills it. A free TrainingPeaks account sends today's workout only, and TrainerRoad sends today plus three days. We send the full seven, and it refreshes every morning, so there's always a complete week waiting.
What happens to my device when the plan changes?
It updates. Whenever the plan changes, the revised sessions replace the old ones on your Wahoo account, so you won't ride a workout the coach has already dropped. Adapting the week around a missed block or a bad stretch is a Coach-tier feature; on the free tier the plan still rolls forward daily and the device still follows it.
Do I need a power meter?
No. With power, targets are sent as ranges anchored to your estimated FTP. Without one, they're sent as heart-rate ranges in beats per minute, which is what Wahoo's computers display natively.
The workout is in the Wahoo app but not on my computer.
Almost always Wi-Fi. Bluetooth will move a single workout from your phone to the head unit, but syncing a whole week needs the computer itself on a saved Wi-Fi network — you'll see a solid Wi-Fi symbol in its top bar. Your phone being on Wi-Fi isn't the same thing, and that's the most common version of this problem.
What are you allowed to do with my Wahoo account?
Read your rides, and add planned workouts. Nothing you've ridden is ever edited or deleted, and nothing gets posted anywhere. If you decline the write permission, everything else still works — you just don't get sessions on the device. You can revoke us from your Wahoo profile at any time.
Does this cost extra?
No. The Wahoo connection and workouts on your device are part of the free tier, alongside your training analysis and one active plan. The $15/mo Coach tier adds adaptive week rebuilding, the AI coach chat, and post-ride analysis.
